Cork City Council is responsible for local government and the economic, social and cultural development of the city. Cork, situated on the south westerly coast of Ireland, has its origins in a monastic site founded by Saint Finbarr in the VI century and received a charter of township in 1188. A key trading port since the Middle Ages, the city underwent important development during the XVIII and XIX centuries. For 2005, Cork is the European Capital of Culture.
