![]() | | The Cistercian Abbey of Foigny The Abbey of Foigny was founded in 1121 by Bernard de Clairvaux. With a church as vast as that of Clairvaux, it possessed one of the largest abbeys of the Christendom. Having become very prosperous, its buildings were destroyed during the Revolution, but the landscape still strongly retains the traces of the monks' presence. Numerous indications reveal their presence: a 19th century chapel, farm buildings, a windmill that is still active… The old abbey windmill of Foigny is still working and produces electricity: the existing structures therefore constitute an excellent base for technical explanations particularly aimed at schoolchildren. |
