from 8th February to 2nd September 2007

Museum Catharijneconvent presents In the Name of God! 1000 years of monasteries. This exhibition focuses on the history of monastic life: from the origins of the first monastic orders, through their expansion in the Middle Ages to the form of their existence today.

In the Name of God! 1000 years of monasteries provides an insight into the daily life in a monastery, based on art works and household articles. In addition, the motivations to join a monastery and the most important activities of the monks and nuns are addressed: Ora et Labora (Pray and Work). The exhibition also features modest images depicting the atmosphere in monasteries and sympathetic portraits of monks and nuns from the series Conventuals (Kloosterlingen) by the contemporary photographer Annie van Gemert.

The European Interreg NWE project Converting Sacred Spaces prompted the creation of this travelling exhibition. In addition to the Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht, twenty abbeys in northern France and Wallonia are involved in the project, as well as the Abbey of Park in Louvain, the Fountains Abbey in England and the Foundation House of the Presentation Sisters in Cork. Museum Catharijneconvent and the Abbey of Park in Louvain have expanded the educational exhibits with beautiful highlights from their own collection and with various objects on loan.
